This bothers me every year. Is it really fair for professional backup singers, who have been paid for their backup vocals by the like of Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and the others that have been mentioned this year, to be competing against the likes of a 16 year-old high school student?

I thought this was supposed to be an amatuer contest. If they sing for these professionals, wouldn't they have other outlets to make it big? They can't find connections with the professionals? Just confused by this, and was wondering if anyone else was too.

Webster's Dictionary defines "professional" as..."engaged in by persons receiving financial return"

wow i neva thought of it that way but yea i am with you on that one. I think so too that if they can get big wig gigs with some of the most popular singers then why can't they get there own music out and about instead of takin the chance of amatuer ppl who haven't eva been popular, maybe only in church or school, and give them the spotlight not the pros. thats not fair....there should be some stipulations with that show. but oh well. you know how ppl are to make money off of tv but yea i agree 100%

I want to offer another perspective.

If you want to have an amateur contest, limiting it to people with NO experience, the program would not be very entertaining. I'm talking people who only sing in the shower. People who are really serious about this, (and I feel they are the ones who deserve to be on this program) are going to have SOME experience. It's almost like saying, "you were in a musical in 6th grade? Sorry, you can't compete." My point is, you can tour with a professional band and when that tour is over, you're back to being Joe Average. These artists have paid dues and this is what they have been working toward. I think the "amateur" emphasis is because the singers are not professional recording artists, (signed to a major label). We saw the singers with NO experience during the first 3 weeks, and I wouldn't vote for any of those spectacles.

Unless they are registered with the professional musicians union, they are not considered professional. Furthermore, music is one of the most competitive arts out there. There may be some musicians who would "hook up" their backup singers with other assistance, but the fact of the matter is most will try to hold them back, for various reasons: they make them sound good, they don't want to have to train anyone else, they don't want to have to compete with them. Since the show is produced by peopel who supposedly know the business, you can assume they took this into account.

You know, something about that always bothered me too. The show is to find a nobody that has no other way th make it into the business. I can't believe Christina Aguilera woudln't hook up her back-up singer and help him out...

I dont watch this crap often, but I was wondering the same thing. They should keep this open to amateurs, especially since I find it hard to believe that if you are a back up singer to a star, you are going to have a hard time contacting people about going solo. They should do that on their own, they are lazy maybe?

You have to have the ability to sing and if experience is what gets you there....I think she is awesome and I hope she wins!
