What about actually going as a book. Two pieces of large card attached together to look like a book and then just decorate the front with their favourite Roald Dahl title. The Twits, The BFG, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Danny Champion of the World, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory etc. I'm sure this might be easier than trying to choose a character. Or what about the children from Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I'm sure Mike Tevee was a cowboy, Violet could be dressed as a cheerleader who you could paint purple.

If you have a daughter, you should definitely dress her up as Matilda - the best Roald Dahl character ever! All you need to do is geek her up a little and make her look a little messy (which is perfect for a kid as I am sure they will end up looking like that anyway!!) and give her a pair of glasses frames and she's sorted! BFG is another good one. Again, just a raggedy old shirt and some trousers that are too short (so it looks like he/she has grown out of them cos of their height) and a waistcoat and you're sorted!

Fox From Fantastic Mr Fox, Umpa Lumpa from Chalie and the Chocolate factory. Ladybird/grasshopper or spider from James and The Giant Peach, hope that helps, not easy costumes though

you might go with the Willy Wonka story,,,, you dont say if the 11 year old is a boy or girl,,, but possible choices could be, one could be dressed as Willy Wonka,,,, and one as a Oompa-Loompas
to get ideas, type it in a search engine with costume after, as in "willy wonka costume"
here is a description of the Oompa-Loompas , which can be male or female
"Oompa –Loompas generally have orange faces with white eye-brows and green hair. They wear white gloves to cover their hands. They also wear white shorts or Capri pants. They wear white cross suspenders or cloth strips and white shoes or sneakers. Their suspenders are locked with big brown buttons. Their trademark turtlenecks are striped in brown and white. The same colored striped socks complete their dress. The Capri pants are pointed out near thighs. Another type of costume associated with Oompa-Loompas is less popular but is often worn on a Halloween day. This costume is a red one-piece jumper-suit. This suit is ankle length and covers the hands till the wrist. It is accompanied with black and white stripped socks and wrist bands. It has four triangles facing down on the chest. The material used for this costume is synthetic. A broad plastic belt covering the stomach till the chest is worn over it"

The BFG and Sophie! Or The Giraffe and The Pelly if they're not an 11-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl

Well your daughter could go as Cinderella in the fractured fairy tales Raol Dahl wrote, which is btw , hysterically funny, even for adults.
Your son might go as James in James and the Peach or perhaps go as the Peach LOL.

The six year old could be a life size umpa lumpa and the eleven year old could be the BFG, also as the BFG has big ears you could get those free red ears from walkers, they'd do the job and they'd also be supporting red nose day!!

First 2 answers very stupid.
Maybe one could go as James (from james and the giant peach) Or maybe a witch (from the witches). Perhaps they could dress up all raggedy and go as the twits (from twits).
