i downloaded an AVI movie from bittorrent and it wont play sound i'm playing it on windows media player and when i check the sound of the computer its working how can i get the movie to play sound

sounds like your missing a codec - I assume you must already have the DivX codec or you wouldn't see the picture either.
I had a similar problem a while back and it was the ac3 filter that I needed. Thats the standard sound codec used in DVD players. Try downloading and installing that. You can get it for free here - http://ac3filter.net/

I know about the problem you are having:
First of all....everyone should have this software...on there pc....named DivX Player.....it will install a special compressed codec for avi and mp4 video files......after installing you can even play these compressed avi codec files.....in windows media player.....
This player(decoder) is free.....only the encoder has price tag....
Download it here http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/
You can download the DivX Player......its smaller....and it will work just fine.....or you can download the DivX Bundle or DivX Convertor.....these will work too but these files are larger....and the features are paid.
If this doesnt work......then this is your last resort.....download the application known as AviPreview.....ya its free.....

Open the avi file you have downloaded using this application.....this can also play partially downloaded avi file.....

i used to get the same problem, either picture with sound or sound but no picture.
this is possibly a codec problem, best way to solve this is by downloading a divx player which plays loads of things and its free!!!!

well there is many things to do, umm... Go to the start menu, and click all programs, go to accessories and then enter tainment and see if anything is muter, after that if it still has no sound then I am sorry I've done all I can, good luck
