Sarge927 is on the right track. You are probably using a cheap microphone that won't reproduce voice properly. If you are doing this for your own use or family and friends, invest in a reasonably good microphone like an SM58 Shure for $100. There are some reasonable recording mics for $100 or so, however if you are recording to a PC, you don't have phantom power to power these mics without extra equipment. Invest in a good recording program like Acoustica Mixcraft for about $40. In order for you to make your recording sound better, you will need to adjust equalisers to what you want. A nasal sound can be corrected by cutting 400 - 600 Hz range. To add presence to your recording boost the 2K range slightly. You will probably want to add some reverb to enhance your sound. Experiment until you get what you want.

Now if you are making your recordings to sell, unless you have a really well equipped home studio, with knowledge of how to run the equipment properly, then your only choice is to go to a reputable recording studio.

Cheap microphone. My best friend has a recording studio in his house and he'll be the first to tell you that you need a professional quality microphone for vocals. Problem is those professional quality microphones cost over $1,000.00. If you're trying to break into the music industry it's really a good idea to invest in studio time -- that way you get recorded by state-of-the-art equipment manned by people who know what they're doing.

Remember, your voice sounds different when you hear it from an external source like a recording. Your brother is hearing your voice the same on the computer as he hears it every day, whereas you're not...maybe that's the difference?
