one thing that comes to mind is school uniforms. wouldn't our kids be able to focus more on the task at hand if they're not constantly worried about what they are wearing. I have put three kids through school and I know this is a factor. also the new way they try to speed up the whole learning process is obviously not working when we are 17th out of 22 in education. high school graduates can't even read well. do we need to go back to the old drilling methods once used in schools. there are things that can be done that really don't cost anything. how about corporal punishment....when I went to school we were too afraid not to sit there and learn because if we got out of line you would get your butt set on fire.......any ideas?

maybe if we bring back corporal punishment kids won't be bringing guns, knives and drugs to school. we have took too much control away from schools and made them unsafe especially when most parents have to work all day somebody needs to be in charge.

internet is a powerful tool for learning but it becomes a hinderence when kids are using it to download illegal music, porno, video games and chatting. you just don't have that problem in a book.

I agree that school uniforms would be a great idea. Looking at the way things USED to be done wouldn't hurt. Teaching accountability for one's own actions, now what is wrong with that? Look how many kids are on Ritalin now, easy to turn them into zombies instead of addressing the real problems and being able to deal with them, yep, give them a drug and shut up and learn. I really feel very sorry for kids anymore.

You are re-living that old movie "Return To The Future". Even though I agree that some of the old methods worked I just do not think that today's parents will permit them to happen. If a teacher even looks at a kid wrong there is the chance that out of spite the student will talk their parents into bringing up charges on some pretext or another.

Also the NEA will not allow some of the previous practices to take place because the folks you have running the NEA are of the same school as the parents of today and heaven forbid corporal punishment. The NEA is also against making the necessary changes in the classrooms because it is perceived that it will weaken their position of control.

Today's generation having been brought up on the internet would probably be best served by incorporating the PC and the Internet into the learning process even more than is being done today. A child does most of their research via the internet and not a textbook and just feels more comfortable using a PC vs having to set down and read from a textbook.

Changes are necessary and most of all the NEA; the school administrators and the teachers need to be held more accountable than they are today.

School uniforms work, yes. We need them. Kids want to show their individuality do it when they are not in school. It is THEIR job when they go to school. We do not show our individuality on the job in the real world. As far as fixing our education system, going backwards is not the answer. Kids are bored! We need to move into the future by using computers more. Kids love computers. Teachers need to be more interesting. A raise would help but is not the only solution. Classic teaching styles our boring. I remember. Hands on, less lectures. No child left behind is not working. Expecting a child to learn 9th grade math in 6th grade is just insane! We need to stop teaching the "test" and start teaching skills! Teachers need to ultilize the time they have and stop expecting parents to reteach homework! Our school systems are failing and putting band aids on them will not help!
Coperal punishment? Noone better touch my kid, I dont hit or spank and the school system has no right. Detention, suspension yes. Children need to feel safe in every enviornment and that means safe from other students as well. Hitting never helps.

Yes, I agree with you about the Uniforms.
But, the real problems are the Politically motivated, and poorly trained Teachers in our Schools. They spend more time espousing their own Political beliefs, than they do educating our Children.
These are the ones who are responsible for graduating students who can neither read or write the English Language.
We really need to get rid of the Teachers' improper protection of Tenure, which allows them to ignore the complaints of Parents of Children who are not receiving a Proper Education.

It is a PARENT'S job to teach their children right from wrong. It is a PARENT'S job to teach their children about respect. It is a PARENT'S job to investigate what their children are learning and correct as necessary. I have raised more than a few respectful, responsible children... and it is all due to the PARENTAL involvement. Our education system today is swirling around the toilet bowl. We need more personal accountability for the teachers and administrators. We need the ability to FAIL students who don't perform without the fear of repercussions. We need to ENCOURAGE our children to perform to their maximum capabilities... even under difficult circumstances.

If we can't do this, then we fail as parents and teachers... and our next generation of leaders will be lost to mediocrity.

I think if kids are focused on clothes, the battle for that aspect of their mind is already lost. parents should have been teaching their kids since they were very young that competing on clothing is pathetic and shallow.

corporal punishment has nothing to do with learning. drilling methods? once you've learned your times tables, what will you learn that way?

we've improved our children's minds with some very simple ideas - school is designed to crush their spirits, destroy their curiosity, mold their consumer preferences, distort their view of American history, and get them used to other people telling them what's important to think about.

we unschool our sons - they've never had a single lesson required of them, tho of course you teach a child to read before he knows it with years and years of reading to him and pointing out letter sounds and shapes and maybe playing a rock and learn phonics tape in the background while driving..... anyway, our children are so amazingly smart, so polite and thoughtful, so excited about the future and their talents, their lives have proven to us the simple idea that humans want to learn and, if not hindered in their learning by indifferent parents and order-crazy administrators, will learn,

ummmm, what does the slogan about the marxist teachers' union actually factually mean? i see from the thumbs up that it's emotionally stirring, but having known lots of teachers and observed many classrooms (complete with prayers for bush!) i have to wonder what on earth it really means.

School vouchers is a good idea. Give parents a choice of were to send their kids. Competition among schools will force them to get better or fade away.

And get rid of the teachers union.

We only need to take control away from the Marxists in the NEA.

The only "simple" idea needed: Privatization.
