Reading, Writing and Arithmetic as almost everyone has stated. As Smarty explained, it is the fact that you hear the 'R' sound so clearly that this is referred to as the three R's.

Reading,writing ,arithmetic. I'm not sure why that's considered the 3 r's,but that's what I've always been told.

They obviously don't all start with 'R' but the latter is pronounved rithmatic in the saying - hence they call it the 3 R's to make it easy to remember

its short for reading riting and rithmatic ie reading, whriting and arithmatic
