Opinion: Depends on the time period. The software giant it the current the most of the software community must compete against to gain a sliver of a market share.

In the late 80's and early 90's, it was IBM. Companies bought IBM because (an old saying) "No one ever got fired picking IBM." Then OS/2 came and flopped. Microsoft has come to fill that space.

It also depends on your industry. HP, for example, used to be the software (and hardware) giant in the scientific instrumentation market. I have not been in the industry in years, but I think they have lost their strangle hold on that market.

I hope that open source code will help keep any software giant from having the kind of stranglehold on a market they had in the past. Even a former software giant (IBM) has chosen to embrace the open source community. Let us hope they do not smother it.

Hi sivaji j,

Microsoft is the first that comes to mind but there are many more.

Symantec, Sun Microsystems, Broderbund, McAfee, Adobe, Intuit, Roxio, Corel, the list goes on forever.

Some of the large names are fading. For example Word Perfect.
