I believe the latter more than the former applies more aptly to the majority of life's situations. Granted, it is a mixture of both, but the latter takes precedence. There has been more than once where someone's stupidity has directly affected the course of either mine or a close friend or family member's life.

To vanhammer. I did not say allow people to run your life. I'm talking the butterfly effect. For example, someone at work screws something up, say a file, that you are responsible for. You have to take care of it before you leave or are written up. Just so happens it's your anniversary. Your wife is pissed to the point of starting an argument since you couldn't just leave it till tomorrow, ect.... Things have a way of building on themselves.
