Yah its both it was originally duct tape but now that everyone calls it duck tape the company choose to have a picture of ducks and now its officially called duck tape, cool story isn't it?

it is duct tape as it was originally used for taping duct work- there is a brand of duct tape called duck tape, since a lot of people mispronounced it that way, the company came up with a cute way to market their product

Originally duct for the type of work it was designed for, however there is a brand of tape now that is called Duck tape.
