Why is Queen Elizabeth II's husband a prince rather than a king?
Sydney
Sacramento, California

Dear Sydney:
Monarchy follows its own rules, and the British monarchy is no exception. On a hunt for royal trivia, we sought out Yahoo!'s Elizabeth II category. There we found a FAQ page about Britain's current queen.
Created by the Queen Elizabeth II Library in Newfoundland, Canada, the page answers a lot of questions about the library's namesake. A common query centers on Queen Elizabeth II's husband, asking "Why is Prince Philip not King Philip?" Here's the answer:

In the British monarchy, the husband of a female monarch does not have any recognized special status, rank, or privileges. In actual fact Prince Philip does play a major role in royal affairs, but this is not recognized in terms of his title. Interestingly enough, the wife of a male monarch (e.g. the Queen Mother was the wife of King George VI) takes on her husband's rank and style upon marrying, becoming Queen.
The official British Monarchy web site offers more details about the royal spouse. Prince Philip is the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and was born Prince of Greece and Denmark. Upon his marriage to then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947, Philip was given the title "Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich," and was made a Knight of the Garter. (He became a British citizen around this time and renounced his Greek and Danish titles). Elizabeth II was coronated in 1953, and in 1957, she granted Philip the title "Prince of the United Kingdom."

So, though his current princely title is a gift from his wife, he was really a prince from birth. But only his son, Prince Charles, has a shot at becoming king.

Princess Mary becomes queen of the crop Thursday February 1, 09:30 AM

Princess Mary unveiled her a new style for crowning glory as she attended a charity event in Copenhagen recently. The fashionable royal, who is expecting her second child in May, turned even more heads than normal as she showed off not only her growing baby bump but a flattering new hairstyle.

Recently voted the world's most elegant woman by hellomagazine.com readers, the chic 34-year-old has had her shoulder-length tresses lopped off in favour of a long bob. Dubbed the "pob" or "posh bob", it

is a look which has also been adopted by A-listers such as Victoria Beckham and Kate Bosworth.
The Australian-born brunette's younger, fresher look will likely mean big business for Danish hairdressers, as many in her adopted homeland - and beyond - consider her their style icon. Australia-born Mary's new image comes as one Danish magazine reported the crown princess is worth almost 5.9 billion to Denmark in terms of brand value - in other words, worth more than the country's entire dairy industry.

"Tourism benefits from the monarchy in general and from Mary in particular," said the Se Og Hoer article. "Mary helps make Denmark famous around the world everybody makes money when she is around."

Everyone who has said Camilla will not be Queen is wrong. She will not be *called* Queen, in deference to hostile public opinion, but in law she will be Queen just as, in law, she is now the Princess of Wales. The government even sheepishly admitted this in response to an MP's question at the time of their marriage.

As for husbands, it is not a question of kings 'outranking' queens, but a husband's status is never determined by his wife. When a man marries a peeress in her own right he does not get a title. Philip had to be specially created a Prince, several years after their marriage, just as he had been given the title HRH by King George VI, but neither came automatically on marriage. Historically it has always been the case that women take their status from their husband (unless their own status is higher) but not vice versa.

Because a King outranks a Queen, and when a woman inherits the throne in her right (for instance, her father was the king) her husband cannot outrank her.
There are things in some European countries called morganic marriages, where a woman would not take her husband's rank. This is not the case in England. Camilla WILL legally be the Queen Consort-however, she will not use the title.

I think these often are political decisions based on the particular situation. OFTEN the wife does not become Queen. Some kings have more than one wife, for instance.

Because King is higher in rank than Queen so if a Queen is to marry, her husband becomes a Prince, otherwise he would be higher in rank if he was made King ... .... .... Both Prince Albert and Prince Phillip were spouses of English Queens ... ... ...

Qamilla will become Queen but not a "full" queen, she will be like Prince Philip, a Queen "Consort".

Another reason, is that in royalty, KING OUTRANKS QUEEN.

Neither sex is guaranteed to become King/Queen on their spouses acension to the throne.

Camilla won't become queen when Charles becomes King for instance.

Camilla won't ever become queen because Charles didn't marry her first.... She'll stay as Duchess.

If Diana was alive and stayed married to Charles, she would have the title of queen.
