My little Rover 100 had its MOT in January this year and passed. 6 weeks later, the handbrake cable went; I took it to the nearest garage, (which happened to be differnt to where I went for the MOT), and they informed me that the seized cable should have been picked up in the MOT. I now have a new cable fitted. Can anyone offer advice on what to do about the first garage? I had my rear wheel cylinders done there too, and am wondering what else might be wrong with my car.

You can report the garage you had the MOT at,
if you are in doubt ,that they had thoroughly checked your car .

It is difficult to prove negligence on their part ,
as they will most probably state
" Your car was *road-worthy * when it left Us Sir " !

However, you have, the back up proof,
of the condition of the brakes and drums
(needing urgent repair )
( The bill and a written report, from the repair garage )
just 6 weeks, after the MOT cert was issued

Faulty brakes ,could cost you or somebody else,
their lives ,so it is no small matter .

you can apply to, and appeal, for improper issue of MOT cert
There should be an complaints address on your MOT certificate

here is a site that may help you do just that

Good luck

when the MOT is done is only valied for 24hrs from u leaving there mot station after that they are not liable at all as previously mentioned you can report them to ministry of transport who would investigate the allegations but it is very rare they find fault with the stations but they do on occasions take a vehicle of there own in with specific problems they know it should fail on and do occasionally take away the garage authority to carry out MOT

I think you will find that the info leaflets they have in MOT test centres tell you that the MOT is not a maintenance test, its only a test of a number of specific points. If the tester signed off on the handbrake, he was satisfied it was working at that time on that day. Maybe it wasn't, but he signed it off and that's what matters. You have very little come back.

the handbrake efficiancy is tested on the brake rollers, each side is tested in turn and the maximum effort is recorded. the total must reach 16% of the specified vehicle weight on a dual circuit system or 25% on a single circuit system and there should be at least 2 clicks left (reserve travel) after the wheel locks or maximum effort is achieved.

nothing, MOT is purely a check of road worthiness on the day you take it.

If the hand brake worked OK on the test, then you have zero come back.

Nothing. The cable is likely to have been perfectly serviceable at the time of test

This I am afraid is the cost of motoring and wear and tear are your responsibility so stop trying to get something for nothing.
