I assume you are referring to the fact that many individuals will work too much, and not that simply working in and of itself will make one sick. Yes, the US has become a materialistic country, and many individuals believe that the more stuff they have, the more important they are. Thus, this drive to be more important causes them to give up something else, in this case their health, in order to get that feeling of importance. It is sad that it has come to this, but I fear that this feeling is driving alot of behaviors and is unlikely to change anytime soon.
