We are taught that it's more blessed to give than to receive. I've learned that motivation is what really matters. If I give freely and cheerfully, whether it's a material gift or a gift of my time and effort, that is wonderful indeed. But I learned years ago that much of my "giving" was for the wrong reasons. I gave because I was afraid I wouldn't be loved otherwise; I gave because I didn't want others to be angry or because they manipulated me with guilt; I gave to feel like I was a good person; and I gave to win the approval of others.
I learned these wrong reasons growing up and as an adult it wasn't working too well for me. It was tough to learn to say "no" but it sure was necessary. Let your "yes be yes and your no be no." Now when I give it is because I truly want to and it brings me great joy. Sometimes I choose not to give and maybe someone else isn't happy about my decision, but I can live with that.
I had to learn to receive as well. That was strangely difficult and I'm still uncomfortable with it, but if I never take anything inside, I have nothing to give.
I think it is more rewarding to give, but only when I'm able to give bountifully.

It depends on what is being given. When it comes to material things, it's nice to receive, but I enjoy giving just a little bit more. That said, when you give a thoughtful gift, you receive gratitude, and the pleasure of knowing you did something that made someone you care about happy. I get a buzz out of that. Things like respect, on the other hand, I will give willingly, though I prefer there to be a balance on the giving/receiving scale.

The politically correct answer is to give. But my honest answer would be to receive.

A balance is good. If you give too much, you will become very resentful of those who recieve from you but never give in return.
If you recieve too much, you risk becoming a very self righteous and selfish person, inconsiderate of others.
I wish I could recieve more, but to remedy this I try not to be OVERLY giving except to those I know will truly appreciate it, whether or not they give in return.

I love giving! When I go out and buy a gift wrap it up pretty and hand it over, it gives me a sense of pride. I'm happy to make someone happy.
And yes...I do have a life. lol
