I just started watching Grey's Anatomy why do they call him "McDreamy" where does the Mc fit in?

I read that the creator, Shonda Rhymes, has a habit of adding Mc to things. People tend to do it to imply when something becomes culturally ubiquitous, like a McMansion but I don't think it's that thought-out here. So one day when they were first filming the show she and a friend looked at Patrick Dempsey and one of them commented that he was just McDreamy. So they used it in the show for the reasons stated in the previous answer. I personally find him annoying, especially his voice, but I know that most would disagree.

I guess since you just started watching the show you don't know that Derek was estranged for some time when he and Meredith began fooling around at first. So out of the blue, Derek's wife, Addison, showed up after finding out that he had his own affair. When she came on the show Meredith and her friends didn't want to be rude and talk about she & Derek in front of Addison, so Cristina decided to give him that nickname.
Meredith thinks Derek is dreamy so they added the Mc to it because it makes it sound more like a common name and unlike someone in the hospital where they work; so that's where the Mc comes in at.

I would expect this to be a play on words having something to do with the Mc as in McDonalds or at worst something having to do with a guy like Mic Jaggar, why people still think him a find is beyond me but it plays on in this guys situation. This show seems to think that many of the cast have nic names.
