I am going to London on Monday, the Oyster card really isn't for 1 day visitors and I understand the travelcard is £7.50 and each single journey is £4.00. Is there any other way?

the one day travelcard really is the best way to get around london, especially if you're going to lots of places. are you never going to return to london, ever? if not, then just buy the travelcard.
if you think you may return at some point, then i would suggest investing in the oyster card as the money you put on it never expires.
oh, you can also try and hop the fare, but the thought of getting caught and ending up paying a very large fine should be enough to put you off!

Where did you get the figure of £7.50 from, because that is not correct.

You will most likely only need a travelcard for zones 1 and 2, which covers almost all of central london. Also, unless you plan to travel before 9:30am you will only need an off-peak travelcard. An off-peak 1-2 travelcard costs £5.10, not £7.50. If you do need zones 3 and 4 as well it will only cost an extra 60p.

There is no way you can avoid paying the fare as the first poster suggested. Most major tube stations have ticket barriers.

If you have ANY railcard (e.g. young person's) you can buy a Zone 1-6 Travelcard for only £4.80 which will be your cheapest option by a long way (so long as you purchase after 0930). With this you can use Trains, Underground, Buses, Trams and Docklands light railway up until 0430 the following morning. If you don't have a railcard underground stations can give you an oystercard for £3.00 deposit.... a zone one single is reduced to £1.50, so it may be worth it even for one day (you may come back to london anyway and it can give you discounts elswhere)

The Travelcard Zones 1-6 is £6.70 that should cover you for the whole of London and you can also use it on national rail.

Is the travelcard so expensive? You don't need to buy a ticket to all the zones, you can buy a travelcard for the zones you are planning to go to only.

If you travel in zones 1 and 2 off peak (after 9.30am) a daily pass costs £5.10. Check the webpage for the London Underground.
