I like bonzais. I just cant decide whether it's cruel to curb a plants growth and stunt it to show our artistic side.

IT is a plant, it has no feelings. As a banzai, it gets love and respect, as a wild plant, it gets nothing, and maybe cut down or burned up for no particular reason. As a banzai, it gets to stay indoors, and be well taken care of, as a wild plant it must face the wind, rains, snows and freezing cold, maybe to die out from such things. So which is better for the plant? to be loved, cared for and well treated, but remain small. or be in the wild and possibly die out for no good reason? your choice. Frankly I think if that is the only thing you have to worry about, I want your life.

No it is not cruel to bonsai a plant,I do it all the time .Some experts say it will actually keep the plant healthier, because you will be taking closer care of it. Don't be afraid to prune and train plants they are very hearty. It is amazing to me what I can get away with ..... have fun P.S. maybe you should get a book on training bonsai, it will be very helpful....
