Who told you that you need to avoid oily fish? It's not true that you need to avoid them, in fact you should include some in your diet.
Oily fish are fish like salmon, mackeral, herring, sardines and tuna steak.
The reason you might have been told to avoid them is due to concerns about the levels of pollution in these fish. Women of child bearing age are advised to limit their consumption to two servings a week because of the mercury levels in particular which can damage the nervous system of the new born. These are government guidelines.
However, they contain essential fatty acids that are vital to the development of your baby's brain.
The best thing to do is to chose your sources carefully. You can buy organic salmon which is farmed but doesn't contain too many chemicals, as other farmed salmon does.
Smaller fish are better than big fish because the toxins do not build up in the same way. Tuna is a very big fish, so tends to accumulate toxins, so best avoided. And definitely don't eat shark, swordfish or marlin because they have lots of toxins but few beneficial oils. But sardines are better because they are smaller fish.
It would be good for you to eat two portions of good quality oily fish a week because of the extensive benefits associated with the oils. Some people also argue that the benefits of these oils far outweigh the potential problems with the toxins. Studies have shown that women who consume these oils during pregnancy have more intelligent children with less behavioural problems.

You can eat some (no more than twice a week) - salmon, mackeral, herring, and tuna are good. They are important for the omega 3 and 6 which helps the baby's brain to develope.
You should eat no more than three cans of tuna a week, as it contains mercury, as does swordfish and marlin, which you should try and avoid.

Do you mean fish oil???? I would suggest cutting out all fish while trying to conceive (with the exception of canned tuna/salmon) All the fresh fish we eat contains small amounts of mercury. And should be eaten sparingly! Are you charting you cycles? Check at this web site and get the book:)
