Man wanted to build a machine that could do some things he could not, such as keep track of many numbers and perform math on that reliably and accurately.

He also wanted to build machines that could possess intelligence, in a way to play God in an effort to better understand himself.

I view a computer as an extension of humans, it is an extension to our minds that can do things our mind cannot do as well.

I believe that the first modern computers were designed to help the military calculate trajectories for their artillery shells during WW2 since these calculations whilst relatively simple were extremely time consuming to do by hand.

However archaeologists believe that the Greeks had mechanical computers which they used to observe the solar system and track the motions of the stars and planets although I think that may be a bit further back than you were looking for!
