"No child left behind" has become "no child left". The first thing to do is get rid of the Dept of Education. The quality of US schools has steadily declined since this agency was created. Education is the responsibility of the community and should be monitored by State government. The Federal government has no place in the process and should be removed. If the money eaten up by the Dept of Education were spent on local schools we would have a MUCH better system. D of E gets an F-.

People claim it's the government, but, whatever happened to personal accountability? I'm a step-father to a 13 year old girl, who is either incapable of correctly spelling, or who just doesn't care. Her mother will not let me tighten the screws.
I look to other families, and I see similar situations where parents are just too permissive, and then whine because their kids bring home bad grades. Kids may not like negative feedback, but, I believe it at least lets them know you care about where they are going in life.
Then I look to the community, and I don't see one. I see people telling others to mind their own business, and not caring about their neighbors, then wondering why the community isn't there for them when something horrible happens.
Community? What community? The church down the road is five stories tall, yet doesn't have the resources to help people find a job. Excuse me? Someone in our subdivision can't make bills and asks for help, yet we can't spare a can of soup? What?
And now, the government. Why do we look to the Federal government? Why not our state? Why not our county and/or municipality? They get our taxes, just like the Fed does! As a veteran of the military, I can tell you, in all honesty, it doesn't matter what party controls the Congress or the Presidency. Expecting anything in a timely fashion from our Federal government is ludicrous!
On the same token (And, more in-line with your topic), the Federal budget, when you consider it on a school by school basis isn't very big, at all. Not compared to State, County, and Municipal budgetary contributions, it isn't. So, when we look at an educational failure, we need to look at the local school board, the county school board, or the State Superintendant of Schools for the failures to produce. Everything doesn't fall on our Federal Government's head.

The USA is unique among the other industrialized nations.
Only a given amount of the GNP can be used for social programs and military defense and maintain a viable economy.
When a country is not producing arms, it's said to have a butter economy. When a country is at war, it's said to have a guns economy. Since the end of WWII the USA has had to maintain a guns and butter economy. The need to produce arms takes away from the portion of our production wealth that we can commit to other social programs.
The industrial countries who exceed the USA in education don't face that problem. They don't need a huge military to protect their interest that is spread across the globe. They depend on the USA to maintain world peace.
Being the dominate force in the world comes at a cost.

Liberals are self loathing creatures.
That explains a lot of what they do that makes no sense.
Liberals are the new fascist Nazi's.
They can't tolerate any opinion different than their's.
Look what they do to college speakers. They throw urine, pies, pull fire alarms, start fights, etc etc, to keep conservative's from speaking.
They want to pass laws to eliminate talk radio.
Liberals are intolerant, bigoted fascists, incapable of allowing free speech.
Islamicfascists have pledged to murder you and me.
Liberals want to help them.
Conservatives want to fight them.
Liberalism is ok when it is practiced.
But todays America's liberals, are not real liberals.
They are against change of all types and devoid of new idea's or solutions to problems.
Conservatives offered many new programs and initiatives the last 6 years, and liberals always fought against them, with never an original idea or solution to offer in return.
Liberals love it whan a woman murders a child that is unborn but hate it when criminals who rape, murder and commit attrocities get the death penality.
In reality the liberals of today are Stalinists and Marxists. Their belief that government is the solution to all problems and no wealth should be privately owned is what drives todays liberals.
They are also anti-American. They believe America is the worlds problem and the world would be better off without America in it.
Liberals are all for forsaking the poor weak and downtrodden if America's military is involved in keeping them alive, but insist on keeping America's poor weak and downtrodden in their miserable existance because of 'political correctness', (New Orleans and any urban city).

The involvement of federal government And unions have devolved the American educational system to the point that home schooled children out score those forced into...
Government involvement in education...Equals indoctrination, which equals...substandard democratic socialist tripe.
Just an aside...Where did you get your ratings?
Could you possibly share an agenda there?

Why has education FALLEN.
1. Societal factors - youth culture, lack of discipline and authority, drugs, etc.
2. Educational community beliefs - pursuit of ideological hobby-horses instead of solid progress, educational fads, etc.
3. Lack of student accountability. Students can do anything they want and they won't fail or be thrown out of school as a consequence.

I think the people who care about education and have kids in school don't have property or influence.
The property owners don't want their taxes going up if their kids are raised or going to private schools.
So all you get are promises about no kid left behind instead of funding and reform.

US compared to other industiralised nations:
healthcare ranks right at the bottom
prison population per capita is by far the highest
gun deaths the highest by an order of magnitude
freedom of journalists in in the lowest quartile
only developed nation to retain the death penalty
You spend all your money on war - where is the surprise in this?

Because BushCo wants an "ownership society" = he and his buddies own everything and Americans are the "workers". No need for education reform, education just makes people question things.
Bush Budget Kills or Greatly Slashes Funding for 46 Education Programs.
In his fiscal budget for the federal 2006-2007 year that commences on October 1, 2006, President Bush proposes to end 42 US Department of Education programs and significantly reduce spending for four other Education programs, for total budget cuts of $4.279 billion.
The Bush-proposed education budget cuts for 2006-2007 affect all public schools and students, but the brunt is borne by disabled and economically disadvantaged students; teachers of math, science, foreign languages and bilingual education and who have outstanding student loans; and especially (and curiously) in the teaching of American History and Civics.

All of the above. I think education is a partnership and it's decline should be placed on every ones shoulders.
thanks for your question. I hope it raises awareness to this growing problem.
