Does anyone know if the marks should be directly across or should the cam mark be on the high side. I know they must align but the book shows directly across but seems its not right because after I put it as the book showed and started to rotate it the exhaust valve was opening up.

What I meant to say about the exhaust valve opening up was : It is opening up with the piston starting down into the power stroke. That is why I beleive the mark should be 180 from where I am now. Book isnt really clear with pic as like it to be,

the best way is to get the number one pistion up,, now to do this, pull out the number one plug, ...have some one bumb the starter, slowly ,till you hear a wosh sound,, i my self put my finger over the plug hold, then look to see if the crank pullly ,is on the mark, now if you putting a timeing chain on, it must be, number one pistion up, an cam mark, pointing down, ,take a ruler and have both mark pointting at each other

Remember, it is a 4 stroke engine...the timing marks on the crank shaft pass each other TWICE, but the cam shaft only turns once. If you had the presence of mind to set the crank shaft, cam AND distributor at the firing point, then you should be fine lining the two gear marks up as in the book. Mechanically, when you align the two gear marks right, the very next valve to open should be the exhaust valve.

It might be possible for it to be 180 degress out, try rotating the cam shaft one full turn and line the marks up again and try it.

Otherwise there must be something you are missing.
