If you think that you do not owe all or part of the money, you need to contact the organisation who is claiming the money from you. Search on Google for your local council and give them a call.

The organisation concerned has told the bailiff or Enforcement Officer that you owe this money, and it is not up to the bailiff or Enforcement Officer to decide that you do not.

You should make sure that you have the relevant account number or reference number to hand when you contact them. You will need to find any reciepts or bank statements that prove you have paid. If you don't have any proof that you have paid, you will likely have to pay up.

If you are unsure what to do now, call your local CAB branch and ask for advice: http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/

REMEMBER - The Bailiff cannot force entry into a domestic property. The bailiff can walk through an open door, climb over a garden wall, enter through an unlocked door or climb through an open window.

The Bailiff can force entry and seize goods if a debtor defaults on a Walking Possession Agreement.A Walking Possession Agreement can only be made after peaceful entry.

If you owed the council money then it is likely that you would have had a few letters through the door telling you. When I was at uni I worked in a collections department. Normally companies torment late payers with letters and telephone calls before they send the debt on to a third person (the bailiffs) as they have to pay them. This would explain why you are only now having people come to your door to collect a debt from 2005 (if you do owe the money).

There are also times when letters go astray etc and people are in big trouble before they even know there is a problem. I would call your local council, as even if your debt has been moved on to a third person they will be able to tell you who it has gone to, and give your a number for them.

If it turns out you do owe the money then you need to find out where your mail has been going!

you should of recieved a least 3 letters from the council your case demanding payment when you failed to complie they would of issued a final warning detail the baliffs a coming if you do not pay they don't need a court order since the baliff profession has been round since before the courts they used to collect taxes for the barons and lords. It is true they cannot just bust in your house but if you do not let them in they will just go to the courts and get a order and come in anyway. Another **** thing about is you will be responsible for the baliffs fee every time they arrive at the door it is added to the fine and stuff they take is valued at a secound hand rate so that £200 tv will be worth £60 in there eyes. Get in touch with the council explain you did not recive warning letters there a bunch of dick heads

If you opened the door to them then your in trouble I'm afraid.
If you opened the door it gives them the right to gain entry to your property at any time, using any force necessary.
If the have been refereed by the council to retrieve the debt then they can even posses vehicles, your only option is to offer to make some payments.

First check with the council that they have refereed your debt, there are a lot of scammers out there that count on people panicking and pay up straight away even though they owe nothing

As long as you don't answer the door they have no right to force entry. You would have been contacted before if you owe the council money - check with the council and call the Police if it was not genuine. Sounds like they may be con artists and the next person (possibly elderly or vulnerable) may not be so lucky

Do not open the door and keep the windows closed. They are not allowed to force their way in to a private residence. It may be best to pay your council tax

Did you really have no idea that you allegedly owed this money?
Bailiffs are a last resort, sent in after numerous letters have been ignored, so it's a little hard to believe you have given us the full story!
