It only costs us about 60pence a year each (about $1) so i think they're quite good value for money really, It makes us a little different to most other countries in a good positive way. It's harmless tradition and most of the Americans who infest the streets of London seem to be insanely jealous of our class, panache, style, grace and intellectual superiority whilst they stare agog at Buckingham Palace.
I remember with fondness when a gaggle of US tourists gathered around a guard at Windsor castle when there was a very clear sign on the wall behind the guard saying (in every language) " DO NOT CROSS THE WHITE LINE". They had crossed it and were stood giggling next to the stationary guard when the Regimental Sergeant major, from 50 yards away, yelled, at the top of his voice. "GET BACK ACROSS THAT F*****G LINE! CAN'T YOU F*****G READ?"
the looks on the Americans faces was pure comedy.

What the British respect is the tradition of the Royal family, not necessarily the persons involved. For some reason it is ok to respect old out-dated traditions.
I would suggest that most British subjects don't even know who the members of that family are. They could, however, tell you loads about other "important people", like the Beckhams, Jade Goody, Kerry Katona.

The Royal Family provide the British people with a politically independent Head of State who, not having been elected or appointed has not been subjected to the corruption inherent in politicians.

That family while has had some disgrace and oddities in the last 25 years, it has been a mainstay of grace and dignity. While I am only 33 and Canadian the tales of the Queen Mom refusing to leave the city with the WW2 raids going on is legendary. You do not turn your back on tradition.

I'm not sure, but it is THEIR royal family. What I'd like to know is why Americans are interested in the British royal family. I mean, didn't we fight a war to get free of them? And quite honestly, it's no different from the US worshipping uneducated, clueless superstars with no redeeming qualities.

I respect any institution that can hang on to antiquated privilege and can live to such a high standard without having had to scrape and save like the rest of us.
I mean you just have to hand it to them and the way they continue from one generation to another by enlisting unstinting support from sycophants and toadies who will cringe ever so gratefully for the odd O.B.E.and a royal wave.
Major vomit here.

A lot of us don't. Americans seem to be much more interested in the Royal family than most people from the UK.

I respect them because they pay a key part of the countries roll in a global balance, you see firstly they have key rolls in numerous charties lending their hand to pay back some of the money they cost us to those who need it, secondly they are part of our hertitage which we are lucky to have unlike others like USA whos history is so shirt, Finally they help bring in money though tourism and defenatly pay for themselves.
Remember their born into the roll they don't get to choose it, you gotta respect them for that after all they have no privacy and have to do everything correct and proper like, it would have driven me mad YEARS AGO!!!
