aggregate goals means the total goals count from teams that play each other twice, home & away. this is usually used in the knock-out stage of a competition, such as UEFA Champions' League & UEFA Cup. the team that score the most goals over two matches will progress to the next phase.
for example, here's the result of the 2005-2006 UEFA Champions' League knock-out stage:
1st match - Chelsea 1-2 FC Barcelona
2nd match - FC Barcelona 1-1 Chelsea
the above results shows FC Barcelona have scored 3 goals & Chelsea scored 2 goals in total over two matches between them. so FC Barcelona won 3-2 on aggregate & progress to the quarter-finals of the 2005-2006 UEFA Champions' League as FC Barcelona scored more goals than Chelsea.
here is another example from the 2005-2006 UEFA Champions' League knock-out stage:
1st match - Glasgow Rangers 2-2 Villareal SC
2nd match - Villareal SC 1-1 Glasgow Rangers
from the above, both teams has scored 3 goals over two matches but in some competitions, like the UEFA Champions' League, the away goal rules will be used to decide the outcome. away goal means any goal scored by the away team is considered as double. so, Villareal SC scored 2 away goals while Glasgow Rangers scored only 1 goal & Villareal SC progress on away goals rule.

OK, I was also part of the "Ignorant US sports fan who didnt understand soccer" But here is my example (which is made up) Lets say Chelsea plays AC Milan. The first match is Chelsea @ AC Milan and the score is 3-1 with Milan being the winners. In Champions league all away goals are worth 2 points in the aggregate count. So, for all intents and purposes that should would be AC Milan with 3 and Chelsea with 2. When Chelsea would be home they would ideally need a 2-0 victory because, with the aggregate score of the previous game 3-2, the score would then be 4-3 aggrgate because Milan did not score any goals. After the two legs and the aggregate score is calculated, that round is over, no different than any other sport and the aggregate scores DO NOT carry over to different rounds.

Yes total goals is the decider
but in the case of a tie
Team A Vs Team B (agg. 2-2)
First Leg
Team A when playing at home wins against Team B 1-0
Second Leg
Team A Lost playing away to Team B 2-1
Now since 2-2 is the final aggregate, the winner is TEAM A
Because Team A has that 1 goal advantage scored when playing away. I hope it make sense

Basically, here is how it is.:
1st Leg (Home): Red Team 3-2 Blue Team (Away)
2nd Leg (Away): Red Team 1-3 Blue Team (Home)
Aggregate: Red Team 4-5 Blue Team
Blue Team advances
In the case of a draw, the winner is determined on Away goals:
1st Leg (Home): Red Team 3-2 Blue Team (Away)
2nd Leg (Away) Red Team 0-1 Blue Team (Home)
Aggregate: Red Team 3-3 Blue Team
Away Goals: Red Team 0-2 Blue Team
Blue Team advances

an away goal is worth two but only in the case of a a complete draw...say A vs. B ends 1-2(A at home) and A vs. B (A away) ends 1-0: the aggregate score is 2-2 but B goes through bacause they scored 1 more goal away

You could easily say that the goal scored away from home count twice. So, we see that there has to be a goal. For instance if it's a draw of 0:0, there is no winner - but, if a draw is 1:1, the visiting team wins.

away goals only count if the game ends a tie after both legs.e,g. your team got beat 2-1 away from home and then won 1-0 at home, your team would win overall because the aggregate score is 2-2 but you scored away from home.

it's like an advantage a team gets for scoring away goal, example Munich and real 3-2 beyern got a 2 goal advantage, if they win in Germany on the next leg they will go through on aggregate for their away goal.

if u score away from home, it is seen as being harder than at your home ground. therefore if it were a draw(totalled from the two games) then the team who had scored the most away goals in the 2 games would automatically qualify
