Hey guys

Hoping someone can help me with naming this flag, and possibly posting a picture? It's for a quiz I'm doing... here is the description.

Its a navy blue background with a shield in the center. The shield has a sun in it, with mountains below the sun, and two yachts below that.

On each side of the shield there are two women, one holding scales and a sword and the other woman holding a stick. Both women are holding the shield.

There is a globe above the shield and a bird with spread wings above the globe.

Thanks so much for any help!

Cheers!

Here are some ideas which may help you find the answer ....

1. Coat of Arms
a) The coat of arms (shield etc.) sounds like part of the flag of a British dependency, especially:
(i) the navy blue background;
(ii) the shield with an intricate internal design;
(iii) two beings on either side of the shield, holding it;
(iv) an object above the shield; and
(v) a creature above that object.
b) Here are some examples:
(i) South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

(ii) Tristan da Cunha

(iii) British Antarctic Territory

2. Symbolism
a) The sun, mountain and yachts indicates a tropical or sub-tropical island (but that's just my personal view).
b) The bird, should be a clue, especially if you know what kind of bird. Thus it could be a typically local one, as appears on some flags:
(i) Sisserou Parrot / Dominica's national flag

(ii) Condor / Ecuador's Coat of Arms
http://www.fotw.net/flags/ec)coa.html
(iii) Curlew / Škofljica municipal flag (Slovenia)

d) The USA is fond of a spread eagle
(i) Great Seal of the United States
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Great_Seal_of_the_US.png
(i) US Virgin Islands
http://www.fotw.net/flags/vi.html
d) woman holding scales and a sword - this is Lady Justice, a centuries-old figure representing justice, and based on the Roman goddess Justitia.

e) woman with stick - women are rare on flags, because of traditional values when flags were designed. The woman with stick probably represents some local activity. Here are examples...
(i) Ferreira do Alentejo Municipality, Portugal

(ii) Luče Municipality, Slovenia

3. In summary, that's not an answer, I know. But maybe if you have any other details that you have not disclosed in your question, then you can detect the likely origin of the flag. The Flags of the World website is an excellent resource. It has all kinds of flags (political parties, social movements, yacht clubs and many more); its collection includes older, replaced flags, as well as current ones; and you can conduct searches by key words.
