Fake it is the best answer. Strength is a perception. You will have a chance to crumble later.

If you have promised something specific that does not jeopardize who you are then you stick to your promises. If it is only about the other person then all you need to do is stand by them (like a buddy system), love and encourage the good. "letting them down" is relative because during a crisis situation moods and emotions change a great deal. Good luck to you!

You do the best you can. Put yourself aside for the moment. It's okay for them to know that you're struggling for them - they'll just appreciate the effort, your love. But for now, do the best you can, and take your pain to someone who can be strong for YOU.

BY not revealing your inner feelings to them, listen to them,not offering advice but simply lending an ear or a shoulder for them,that alone is reassuring to them & should comfort them to some degree.
