Well first of all, the pet stores (Some not all) don't know fish. If the bags didn't come in already marked with the type of fish they wouldn't know what they were.
Also, most pet stores realize their fish aren't going to be in the tanks long. Unfortunately these types of stores i.e. walmart, their fish don't last long once you purchase them. They have been so stressed out leaving the door open to ich and other diseases.
Also, someone getting paid $5.50-$6.00 an hour doesn't care if the fish get along or even die. There is no skin off their nose.
Most are not set to "fish school" they have to learn by the teenager who just quit, who learned off the one before him/her and so on.
This is where the bad advice comes from and newbee's to fish keepping become disappointed when the bad advice turns to disaster. To some pet stores, the animals are treated the same as if they were a can of beans. Put the inventory on the shelves then sell sell sell. that is what they call "big business". Which looks good to investors on paper. What they don't realize, it looks bad to the rest of us.
This is why most of us will stress going to a reputable store to purchase your fish. Look at the fish to be sure they are healthy, ask question.
The fish stores can over load each tank because the filtration is totally different than a tank you would have at home. The fish normally don't stay at a pet store longer than a week. (most of them) so they aren't worried about overloading the system.
I would find another store to buy my fish if I were you.

The bottom line for a fish store is money. If they can convince people that teh danios will live in the small bowl, people will perhaps buy the small bowl and the danios, thinking it's cheaper and something they can afford. Also, in the large tanks, they seem to have the idea that they sell the fish so fast that they aren't in the container long, which of course is sad because when you buy the fish it is probably sick or completely stressed out.
Another problem seems to be high turnover rate in employees. They aren't paid much, and most don't know much about fish. They of course do the best they can (the employees) but they know very little. Why a simple training session isn't provided is beyond me, possibly because tehy do have a high turnover rate and it would be too expensive.
The stores idea probably is the more fish they sell, the more money they make. If they sell you a fish and it dies, you'll come back and buy another. Of course this is silly, those of that have a tank that has been up and running healthily for years know that we probably spend way more than a casual person who buys a couple fish that die then buys a couple more and give up.
It's sad really that they don't take more responsibility for the fact that they are caring for live animals. Some live fish stores (LFS) do take better care of their fish, I would seek them out.

Sadly most pet stores dont care as long as they sell fish.
I find Pets @ Home where I Live to be extremely good with there fish. They know all about each fish and compatability. All the fish are in the right tanks and not over stocked. They are great on advice aswell.
Ive seen crap shops and never buy fish from them.

yeah, once i went in a fish store and there were two DEAD zebra danios in a itty bitty container thing(not a tank). i told them and they were like "oh, sure sure" and they put another two danios in there.
the reason is probably because the fish there aren't worth much to them and nobody ever tried suing them.

If those weren't some sort of food, then I wouldn't go there if the service is that bad and the people don't care if their livestock is killing each other.
