Actually chamber music, baroque, or something with approximately 60 beats per minute alters your heart rate and occupies your creative right brain so that your analytical left brain can stay more focused. TV...No, Rap or Heavy metal....No, but the right type of music will assist your brain in assimilating information.

I'm a studier. I have to study a lot (for every hour of class, 1 to 2 hours of individual learning from book, then individual teacher help from those who offer it which most all do at my small university, and then however long it takes to do the assigned homework usually 2 hours) I usually treat my school day like a 10 hour work day 5 days a week and as needed on the weekends. Here is what I do, some times I listen to classical music, sometimes a don't I never sit at the same spot in the library and I utilize as many different study rooms throughout the campus as possible (small campus, but a lot of rooms) I go into empty class rooms and study. I do this so I don’t get caught in the predicament that someone mentioned earlier, that if you are in a different environment than where you study, you don’t seem to recall as well. So study with music, with out it, in quiet places and noisy places. Go to libraries and coffee shops and always try to have a deep understanding of the information. Don’t just cram and throw up info on the test. Good luck, and sorry its way more info than you asked for

I often studied with music, and I made it through graduate school with flying colors. For the most part, it depends on the person. Some people are easily distracted, some are soothed by it.

One possible disadvantage (or maybe advantage if you can work it out somehow) is that we tend to remember things best in the same circumstances in which we learned them. If you study lounging on your bed, listening to music, you may not remember information as well when you're in a quiet classroom, sitting up at a desk. Try to study in the same position in which you'll talk your exam (sitting up, good posture, a desk or table in front of you). If you're someone who is more focused with background noise, use music. Otherwise, wait until the after-studying celebration.

I used to do that while studying during college. Esp. music of Mozart, helps you not to doze in. I took up Management Accounting and its a sin to sleep. The disadvantages well its not really good if you have roomates, but in my case I dont have any, so I can listen to music and nobody will care.

I always found music distracting while I was studying. I found that my retention wasn't very good, and that I would have to read the same thing over and over to understand it.

My roommate loved to listen to music while he studied. It took him 9 years to graduate from college.

That doesn't work for me. Advantage is that it'll keep you awake if you're doing easy math problems or tedious copy work. Disadvantage is that you won't be focused.

I think that if you listen to music, it should be instrumental - no words. Vocals will distract you more.
