Rhythm and Blues. But why is modern/hip-hop R&B so different from the original R&B (which was a kind of jazz thing)?

It's supposed to be Rhythm and Blues. But to me, that genre means the like of John Lee Hooker, you know, guitar, harmonica, etc.
Today's so-called R&B bears no resemblance to that - and I hate it!

R&B = Rythem and Blues. Not sure where/when this started. Chicago is the capital and home of the 'Blues', so maybe around Chicago way somewhere.
