Both, his ancestry and his skin color. Unfortunately because he is "half" black, to black people he will never be "black" enough (despite his "skin" color), and to white people he will be too "ethnic" (despite the fact that his IS half "white") to be taken seriously. It's really too bad that we live in a country where the real issues of this country are clouded by race, though white people (and black, for that matter) don't want to admit it, people like jessica_I222 prove it every day. But she's right, he'll never get the democratic nomination, and if he does, he'll never be elected president because he will always be considered by white people to be another black man that smokes newports. It's a shame.

Hope you don't mind me butting in on an American issue, but in Australia people with1/16 th Aboriginal Ancestry are legaly able to claim a vast array of social welfare and pension benefits, even though with 1/4 or 1/8 or 1/16 they might as well be blonde haired and blue eyed - infact some are, does this make them Aboriginal - I think not, same everywhere they'l ride what they can and i guess good luck to em mmm maybe !

Great question. This is the reason why I always say he would be the second 'black' president. The first being WJ Clinton.

Obama is as much white as he is black, but for the bigots who want a finer distinction on someone rather than consider their ablility, he is Black.

Obama is considered black because of his skin color.
Example, bet you most think the following list of presidents are white.
Thomas Jefferson - mixed breed Indian mother and mulatto father.
Warren Harding - black ancestors on both sides of his family.
Calvin Coolidge - african and Indian heritage.
Abraham Lincoln - Melungeon or African ancestors.
Andrew Jackson - Irish mother married a black man and his older brother was reportedly sold into slavery.

BOTTOM LINE...

He's unelectable and has no statistical chance of winning the Electoral College--ever. His purported two pack a day Newport Menthol habit, however, resolves any doubt that he is black.
