It's called drama, and the writers of the script know it moves the heart.

There's some other examples in movies,
someone's born at the same time someone else dies.
"I'm about to retire, in two weeks", kind-of detective, - and he's killed.
etc.

Many people will likely disagree with me, but I would have to say it's because it's part of the "Hollywood Formula". I for one, wish Hollywood would go and find some originality somewhere.

I thought it was the other way road. i.e the major incident makes the other person fall in love more with the other
