I have a flourescant tube light, powered simply by a length of cable with a 5amp fuse and plug, switched on and off at a wall socket. If I want to introduce a 'pull cord' type switch next to the tube on the ceiling, how do I do it? The switch has a 1 way a 2 way and a com connectors. I have a feeling this is very simple and I am just not thinking straight, any help, gratefully recieved, Thanx.

If you have 6-8 inches of slack cable near to the light, strip 4" of sheathing from the cable, form a loop, and pass it into the ceiling switch box, which you will have fixed to the ceiling. Cut through the brown/red wire and connect one end to common and the other to either 1 way or 2 way, it makes no difference, sleeve the earth wire with green/yellow sleeving if it is bare? (I dont know if you are using flex or cable?) and connect to the earth terminal in the back of the box. Tuck the blue/black core into the box, screw the switch to the box, plug in and switch on.
PS 'Fluorescent'!!

Where the two wires come out of the ceiling and into the light fitting they will then go to a little wiring block. There may be an earth wire as well. Take the two feed wires from the ceiling and terminate them into a small wiring block, available from B&Q etc, then take one wire and the earth from that block to a ceiling switch either hidden in ceiling if you can manage it or along the ceiling. wire into the switch and then take a single wire back to the block. Then wire each wire back to the original block on the light fitting. How you hide the wires etc depends on the distances between switch and light etc but it will become obvious to you as you do it. You can buy small cable trunking made from plastic. Best of luck and I hope you can follow these instructions.

Where is the other ceiling light located? If there isn't one then you would have to run some 1.5mm twin and earth cable to a pull switch then from the switch to the connection on the fluorescent tube. You would have to connect the other end into your existing lighting loop.

If in doubt try searching the internet for diagrams. Do be careful, you could end up killing yourself. I'm fortunate that my brother is blessed with electrical know-how and he does this kind of thing for me.

Since you now have to have all domestic wiring work certified by a qualified electrician, which may end-up costing you more than if you got one in to do the work in the first place, best not to do it yourself.
(and no I'm not a qualified electrician, relative or friend of one).

Hold the bulb in one hand, put your foot in a bucket of water and stick a fork in a outlet with your other hand.
That bulb will light right up!
