Because you look totally different, because your eyebrows are attached to your glasses.

Glasses do change the appearance of a person. My Aunt had surgery on her eyes and no longer had to wear glasses, which she had needed for most of her life (about 80 years!) People who had known her a long time didn't recognise her immediately and once they realised it was her commented on how much younger she looked. Perhaps one reason is that glasses magnify a person's eyes and provide a focal point (no pun intended!) when speaking with that person. Therefore, their eyes would look different (smaller) and may mean that people look at other facial features as well as the eyes. Some people choose to change from glasses to contact lenses - this has the same effect, their face changes and makes them appear to be different, when in fact little has changed.

When I first had to wear glasses all the time I was terrified of this happening - I chose rimless ones which cost a fortune but are the nearest you can get to invisible glasses. I didn't want people to think of the real me as being a face with glasses!

Because people make a mental picture of you, and that's what they recognise, so their mental picture of you includes glasses. When you take off your glasses what they see in front of them doesn't match with their mental picture that means you to them, so they are (usually temporarily) confused

when i was younger i never used to wear my glasses alot. one night i was out drinking in town, walking towards a door i saw someone coming towards me so i moved to let them come through the door, then realised it was my own reflection in the glass door. the bouncers were hysterical with laughter cos they realised what i'd done. felt very stupid.
people get used to seeing you with glasses so it seems strange to them if you don't wear them.
