The simple answer is: about 5 billion times. (5x10^9 times).
The age of the solar system is about 4.6 x 10^9 years. It originated when a hydrogen cloud started to contract enough to make fusion possible in the sun's heart. The earth is about that age too. The orbit of the earth was probably somewhat larger than today, and therefore the "year" was longer. Repeated collisions with other debris made the orbit circular and smaller and the "year" smaller. But 5 billion years is a nice round number.

Good question Jemima!
Scientists think that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old, so it has orbited the sun 4.5 billion times.
That's 4,500,000,000 times!
