what is exchange server?

what is exchange server? And what is lotus notes server? How are they different?

They are both mail-servers, the difference is that one is created by Microsoft (Exchange with Outlook email system) and the other by IBM (Lotes Notes "Domino" with Notes email system).

The big difference with those 2 systems is that Lotus has a Database system with it.
