If you want a light hearted film, with not too much historical accuracy you couldn't go wrong with 'Kelly's Heroes' with Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas and Donald Sutherland.

If you want a reality film try 'Enemy at the Gate' about the contest between a Russian and German sniper during the battle of Stalingrad.

For a German view Das Boot (the Boat) is brilliant even at nearly 7 hours long.

For sheer tension (with little fighting) 'Ice cold in Alex' is a black and white film about the crew of an ambulance trying to get back to British lines after being overrun by the Africa Corps, and suspecting that a South African soldier they have picked up is a spy.

Saving Private Ryan, although very pro-American. Just for the reality of the opening beach scene. That is a real War film. It makes you view these veterens, selling poppies in the High street, a little more differently.

Some old shows I can think of. The Longest Day, The Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, Bridge Over River Kwai, Midway

Oh yes! The Great Escape.

Saving private ryan is an amazing movie! Also, if your German or understand German or want a movie that is based more on the German side of the war, then you should wath "Der Untergang" or "Das Leben der Sophie Scholl"...These are all really good movies!

there are plenty of great WWII films out there, the only problem is not all of them on out on DVD yet, staliag 17 (sp?) is a comedy based off a real P.O.W. camp that held Americans, the great escape with Steven McQueen is another great one, then there's Patton one of the best ones of all time. anything with John Wayne will be good also.
