the one i'm looking at is £500. Hewlett PackardProcessor speed: 1.6 GHz Processor: AMD Turion 64 x2 Dual Core Screen size: 15.4 inches Storage (hard drive): 80 GB Memory (RAM): 1024 MB Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium but the cache is only 512 kb - is that ok? i notice it's less than others i've seen?

The cache is a small amount of memory that is exclusive to the processor function. It's of small importance to the rest of the machine which is a fairly good spec. Should be paying around £500 for it.

Of if you're buying from HP direct you can get 10% off by using HPLOYALTY in the voucher box.

Well My friend let me tell you Cache is the smallest memory that is present in the CPU.
We can say that its the second fastest memory in a system
It just acts as an interface between the Processor and the Main Memory(RAM).
And coming to its importance it is really very much required for the interaction between the Processor and Main Memory.
Well dude its not actually enough as you have said that you have been given a 512 kb of cache but as u r saying that it's a laptop from Hewlett Packard those people know, what must be the configuration for that particular model?
Anyway u can increase ur cache upto 2MB L2 Cache memory. And ofcourse as you are saying its loaded with Microsoft Vista Home premium edition you require more configuration than you have presently now. You need to upgrade it more. I mean everything including your processor.

If you have anymore queries on this please feel free to contact me.

How important is cache size in general, not just with laptops? Err, size doesn't matter! LOL... hehe, that's the last spec (no pun intended) that you should be looking at. 512KB or 1MB is pretty much the standard today. But instead of worrying about cache, worry about the model CPU you're talking about. The Core 2 Duo, for example, will smoke just about any other CPU out there cache size aside!!

When you say cache what that is in processor terms is the L1 and L2 cache which is very fast memory one is on board the processor the other is on a separate chip and runs at the processor speed 512Kb is low for a modern computer but it's OK and should perform OK.

Cache ; a collection of data duplicating original values stored elsewhere or computed earlier, where the original data is expensive (usually in terms of access time) to fetch or compute relative to reading the cache. 512 is not bad!

Intel processors have higher cache memory capacities than AMD . I advise you to purhase an intel based laptop .
