I hear all the talk about black history month to which I have no issue with it being....

But something has all my life given me pause...

Is the slavery and shooting of asians on mass in the pacifc northwest , as well as thier WW 2 interment, not something that justifes say Asian Hertiage Month?

How about the Mexican invasion of California, Arizona and New
Mexico. Does the killings done in favor of "manifest Destiny", not justify a Latino History Month?

And speking of "Manifest Destiny" how about the attempted genocide of the Native american cultures? Does this not beg for a Native American Cultures month?

It is increasingly becoming my perception that African americans belive only they have ever been oppressed , and all the stuff above clearly contradicts that...what do you think?

Actually each and every minority DOES have a designated month for them to be honored. Black people in America has raised their own banner in the civil rights movement and held it high but we can not help those folk who do not help themselves. We know we were not the only ones oppressed in America but our leaders stepped up. Where is the Asian American Dr King? Where is the Latino Medger Evans? When they march on Washington in the North and face down the KKK in the South we will not be behind you,we will be right next to you. We together will crawl the tunnel of Hope through the mountain of Despair. We will be ready to join hands with you and sing together the words of the old ***** spiritual" Free at last, free at last, thank GOD ALMIGHTY I'm free at last"

You are obviousally culturally ignorant.

And there is a Native History month (November).

You know, if you are active in your community you will see that all people who are of like mind (that's the important part) support each other and realize each other's brutal histories.

You know the defination of racism right? Overgeneralizing. Seems like you are overgeneralizing to all African Americans. How can you know what all African Americans think?
Get involved in your community. Fight for a cause. And you will see you are wrong.

None of those other groups burned US cities in the 1960s. Black Americans have a unique problem. They don't blend into the mainstream as well as the other ethnic groups.
Events like black history month are aimed more at educating the general public than black people. It also puts black heroes in front of black youth, so they can emulate some one other than the neighborhood drug dealer.
Black youth needs to see that they can aspire to greatness in areas other than sports. When the youth see limited opportunities in their lives, they give up.

To the note in the added info... Countless people were killed. They had a large population across these lands, and were killed in huge numbers. Even today their population is a small percent... Jews still exist, but it was a genocide they faced that ended many families. Same with the Native folks here.

Its all apart of american history. The current generation think we owe them something for the suffering of their families during slavery. Its that mentality that brings them down and keeps them from improving themselves. I heard something once that I thought was pretty true. They have black history month and its ok. but, if we had white history month it would be called racist. If we call them the n-word we are racist but if they call us a cracker its not racism. They seem to have a dbl standard, its poor me you caused this. But, we didnt' cause this my generation had nothing to do with slaves or the discrimantion during the 50 and 60s. hell my mom wasn't even alive then so why do I owe them something? I'm by no means racist, color doesn't matter, it seems to me that the only people that color truely matters to anymore is the African-Americans themselves.

African-Americans were robbed of their culture as a result of slavery, so for them to have a month about discovering their history makes sense. The examples you listed didn't involve cultural identity problems, except with the Native American example, so I could get behind that one maybe. Otherwise, I think it makes sense to have a black history month and not a month for everyone else that got messed with.

People of every race, creed and color have been oppressed by someone at some point since the beginning of time. It's all in how good a lobbist you hire and how good your PR man is.

I agree it's time to stop calling it black history month and call it for what it really is AMERICAN HISTORY.
