Silver is one of the most optically reflective elements. It reflects nearly all wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum. Other elements only reflect certain wavelengths and appear to be the color that they reflect (everything else is absorbed). This is also why silver is used on the back of mirrors, although not on your everyday household mirror, where aluminum will work fine.
