Common hearsay states that it was the West/UN that forced the Palestinians from their homes, igniting the whole Israeli-Palestine conflict. However, were they ever forced from their homes? I heard that Egypt and other anti-Zionist regimes told the Palestinians to leave because they were planning on wiping out the entire area, and so it was for their own safety. Which is true?

It was the British because Palestine was under their mandate and the UN gave them ultimate control. On 14 May 1948, the United Kingdom relinquished its Mandate over Palestine and disengaged its forces after the division and creation of a Jewish state had been established.

Five Arab countries -Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria - tried unsuccessfully to include in the special session's agenda an item which would address "the termination of the Mandate over Palestine and the declaration of its independence". The Jewish case was presented by the Jewish Agency for Palestine, while the Arab Higher Committee spoke for the Palestinian Arabs.

During the 1948 war in order to gather support for their war, the Arab media sensationalized the brutality of Israeli forces. In turn as the Israeli army approached Arab villages many inhabitants fled in fear. A prominent Arab mufti during the war called on Palestinians to leave to allow the Arab armies to drive the Israelis out (which they subsequently failed to do)

This of course suited Israel who whilst not resorting to genocide contributed to the exodus by terrorizing (e.g.burning property) certain villages to spread the fear which in turn led to more Palestinians leaving.

Egypt told them to leave for their own safety as the planned to completely overrun and destroy Israel. Only problem is Egypt and the other 4 armies weren't strong enough or intelligent enough to overrun Israel. Their complete and total failure (and the resulting embarrassment) are why they try to cover it up by not opening their countries to Palestian refugees.

When the British mandate ended in Palestine, US and Jews headed by David Ben Gurien using "Hagnah " terrorist/freedom fighter group occupied Palestine and drove Palestinian Arabs as refugees.
