Yep, several of the people round here. They seem to have "purges" in specific areas & they have a list of all addresses without a current licence. As I recall, about £100 each except for one who hadn't had one for years - that was VERY expensive.

They seem to be merciless, except where it's only a couple of days, and they don't miss a trick, including the still-warm TV hidden in a cupboard!

Yes I knew someone who had a knock at the door one evening and were fined a rather large amount of money.

Incidently when you purchase a new TV - the shop is required by law to send in a card to the TV licensing people giving your full details.

Also, like the other postee said - halls of residence at universities are not exempt and each room with a tv has to have a licence!

When I moved into my new house, the first thing I did while my bloke was unpacking was to ring round all the utility companies and sort that out with them (apart from council tax - dont open weekends) and 7 days later, I had a TV Licensing man come round, really angry face like "do you have a tv license" yeah "can i see it" ok, went and got it cos it came through the day before "well i've got here that you havent got one - have you changed the address?" - READ IT AND WEEP! Dont know why they sent him.

They used to print all the names and addresses in the local rag. They haven't done that for a long time. I know someone who didn't have one. At the discretion of the folks in charge, he got away with just having to get a license!

The price is getting a bit silly.

In Ireland we have the same system as you have in the UK. Nearly got fined earlier this week. Inspector gaves us 5 days to sort one out.

Yes, a friend of a friend of mine did because they took a TV to uni and didn't get a licence. He tried to argue that he thought that the uni had one but because they had written to students to warn them he didn't get away with it. It was pretty hefty too - several hundred pounds I think.

They threatened to fine my Father-in-law, he used to get it FREE cus Mother-in-law was over 70! but when she passed away he was 6 weeks short of 70, so threatened him with a back dated fine!
I rang them up & gave them a right ear bashing, so the fine was dropped!
