Education is the answer. its kinda long-term but it is THE answer.

This problem is very real but the situation is fast changing. It will take some time for the effect to be visible, but the process has already started.

See, female children used to be seen as a liability to the family. With more and more girls getting education (and jobs eventually) nowadays, this situation is BOUND to improve as women gradually move in to the earning section of the family.

From ages Indians have been conditioned to believe that a MALE CHILD is the ultimate. To get a male child the parents do many sacrifices and a male child is the hero of the family even if he not good.
There is discrimination between a male and a female child and this has lead to female fetocide and female infanticide.
Girls are not given the same food, the same education and the same status as a male child.
They do not get a share in the property and are treated as chatel in many areas rural and urban.
WE CAN GET RID OF THIS PROBLEM
IF THE GIRL IS GIVEN
EQUAL RIGHT TO ANCESTRAL PROPERTY.
THE CHOICE NOT TO CHANGE HER MAIDEN NAME
Girls will be given the same education and the same food.
The girls will be respected and there will not be any DOWRY DEATHS
SHE WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN CRUCIAL DECISION MAKING AND WILL BE EMPOWERED.
The government must formulate proper legal policies and the social attitude must change to give the woman equal status in the society.
