I work as an ongoing temp in a hospital. I now and again cover for this lady, whilst she's on holiday. She never leaves me with adequate handover notes and everything that could go wrong - does! I have nothing to go off and am left in between booked operations and impatient patients! For no fault of my own, when she returns, she treats me coldly and ignores my very presence. I did my best to cover for her with the little information to go off, but this is how I get treated. Even the doctors admit I haven't been given adequate information. How should I deal with this lady? I've tried my best to do well for her, but this is how she is. She leaves me her home phone number in case I need it and yes, I did need to use it about 3 times, and she spoke to me like a dog! The doctor told me to ring her home number anyway, to gather more info.

Arrange to meet her before the next handover and go through all the bookings and patients. Make sure you're up to speed BEFORE she goes off, so that you don't have a repeat of last time. If she refuses to meet with you, talk to her line manager or your own line manager and get them to organise it. If you do all that, and the handover meeting fails to happen, you should have no qualms about contacting her as often as necessary while she's off.

Have a chat with your boss, her attitude is causing problems for the job, and preventing you from doing your job properly. I understand what you are saying though I unfortunatly have to share an office with this dreadful women, who took it upon herself with in a few hours of my starting to have a problem with me. Although work wise I work for a different business (with in same company) she is supposed to be PA, and never help or gives me info when I need it. I dont understand these types of people, they obviosly have deeper personal problems, but have no right to impact your work. Good luck hope things work out for you, normally what goes around comes around and she will end up falling flat on her face in time, enough rope and all that!

You may want to speak with her immediate supervisor and let them know of the situation that you are in every time that you fill in for this person.
It is not your job to cover for her and being that you work in the health Field I would not feel very safe knowing that people don't know how to do there job.
From personal experience trying to cover and fill in the gaps from another person just burns one out and gets you no were.
good luck

This is a job for your immediate supervisor. Talk to him/her about the problem and let them deal with her. This is a problem, not just for you---but for the patients and the hospital as a whole. It's affecting the quality of care that your facility provides. Good luck.

The hospital management should deal with her, not you. You have her number, USE IT, every time you need to. Then maybe she'll leave you better prepared the next time she goes on holiday. Don't take it personally or let it bum you out. She's the one with issues.

It strikes me this woman is deliberately leaving you short of information in order for you to look inadequate and for her to look indispensable....
What she fails to realise is that she is possibly putting peoples lives at risk by doing this....If the doctors have realised she is selling you short I would suggest you go to your immediate supervisor and explain the situation and name the doctors who have agreed this woman is failing to give you sufficient information, ask your supervisor to speak to these doctors about the situation....explain that you are not deliberately trying to get the woman into trouble but you cannot do your job properly without her cooperation....

Personally I'd hold a small meeting with you, her and your line manager (doctor in your case) and have it out but tactfully, then at least you cant get the blame for future 'episodes' - sounds like me shes frightened that you can do her job better than she can!!!

Welcome to the jungle! Most older lady co-workers are like this. Just do your job the best you can and find out other ways to get it done without having to rely on her even a single bit. The more useless she is to you, the more you can accomplish without being pissed of most of the time.
