Well friend the acronym of Wi-Fi is Wireless fidelity which is a Wireless Communication technology and it's standard is written or given in IEEE 802.11.
It's a technolgy in which there would be no use of all these connecting wires for LAN.
In this technology we have wireless connection of all the systems i.e., we doesnot use any connecting wires for getting connected to LAN.
Ofcourse we have many modifications to these standard i.e., 802.11 as something like 802.11.d and 802.11.g standards.
But basically it's a wireless technology which is replacing all the wired LAN systems in every field.
