Sounds to me like fertiliser is in the water. Thats what i learnt in Biology anyway. It causes loads of plants to grow in rivers which creates big problems.

There are bacteria in water that are called nitrifying bacteria, the take waste of plants and animals and convert it to nitrate and nitrite ions. Look up the nitrogen cycle on the web.

It depends entirely on what type of nitrogen-containing compounds are present. There are many and they come from different sources both anthropogenic (people) and natural.

I am no chemist but I would suspect fertilizer leaching into the system.......
