Lobularia maritima (sweet alyssum) grown from seed in spring(annual plant). Grow in full sun, with fertile well drained soil. Will flower from spring till early autumn.

Very nice ground cover (3 - 10" tall), especially under roses and spring flowering plants. Most seed companies sell it and can be bought easily in punnets as seedling plants.

Yarrow (Achillea sp.) is much taller as stated but likes similar conditions to alyssum (both are drought tolerant when established). It has large heads of flowers on tall stems instead of alyssums smaller heads. Both have lots of flowers and flower for long periods if deadheaded occasionally. Hope this helps, both are worth growing.

Yarrow is a perennial and is more expensive to buy initially but can be divided into a number of plants easily when it matures.

Sweet Alyssum is very easy to grow from either seed or plants. It will self propagate and you'll have even more next year. It grows up to about 5 inches tall and will spread into a beautiful mound. Alyssum has a wonderful sweet smell, especially in the mornings and evenings. When the flowers start to get long and leggy, cut it back about one third and in no time you will see new flowers. It starts to bloom in spring and blooms until frost.

Yarrow is a perennial herb. It grows to about 30 inches tall. Green fern like foliage with clusters of flowers on long stems. It is very pretty but I don't recall it having much of a scent.

Vastly different from yarrow which will grow 2' tall. Alyssum is a ground cover, 3-5 inches in height. Several colors, grown easily from seed - also available as started plants from Walmart.

This stuff is soooo easy to grow it's almost like a weed. Don't buy much because it re-seeds freely. You'll have it coming up all over your yard forever. I have 3 acres, planted one packet and it is virtually all over! Yarrow spreads underground and has lots of rhizomes. Alyssum will have one main stalk and branch out from there. When it fades, pull it out and shake it, making sure you'll have gorgeous fragrant blooms soon!
