It sounds like you are a young strapping cub reporter. Full of p!ss and vinegar.

As retired editor of a very large newspaper, please allow me to give you some advice.

In my younger days, oh so many years ago, I was given the same assignment.

I am sure you have the same fear and trepidation that I felt. All of it, it turned out, completely baseless.

I tried the five W"s (who, what , where, why, when) with him to no avail. But, as you know, dead lines rule our lives.

I then went to the old standby. Booze. You would not believe how much a mime can drink. They think that as long as they don't slur their words, nobody will know. Not true. I could tell when he started falling off that stupid ladder, that didn't exist, that there was no way this interview was going to work.

So, here's what you do. Kick that silly a** mime right in the jewels. I assure you he will speak. Of course it will be incoherent, but that doesn't matter. You have your interview. Short as it was.

Now, you simply have to elaborate for about 500 words of what you thought he said.

Left side, top of the fold with a by-line is guaranteed.

I hope this has helped.

No. Why would it be. A Mime is neither deaf, nor mute. Just hand him a pencil and a paper and ask questions. Problem solved. Here is a bit of trivia, Did you know that the only speaking part in Mel Brooks' 'Silent Movie' was that of the great 'Marcel Marceau?' The only spoken word was 'Non.'

It will be incredibly easy. What can be tough about submitting a blank sheet of paper to your publisher?

Just be sure you don't misquote the mime. Mimes can be dangerous. They will shoot first and ask questions....well um, I guess...never!

It might appear to be tough to pull the information out of him, but just toss him some rope and see if he grabs hold. At least you know he won't make up phony excuses just for the media. He won't beret the truth in his words. And you know that he'll keep quiet and not talk to the other tabloids. Just don't put too much pressure on him. He hates to feel boxed in. Look for the tell-tale signs. His eyes, his body language, ..... they'll give him away. And who knows....... he might have a slip of the tongue. (But I doubt it)

Easy as pie.
But I'm afraid you will have to do all the hard work, asking questions that he can either shake his head as NO or nod for a YES.

You might feel at times like you're fighting an invisible wind, or feel the walls closing in on you, or like you're talking to a mirror. But you'll be okay, if you just read between the signs.
