My little brother asked me for help with his maths homework and I have no idea how to do this question. Any help would be appreciated.

If a father is five times as old as his son, how long ago was the father 34 years old and the son 2 years old.

Thanks

right now the father is 40 and the son is 8. That means that 6 years ago, the father was 34 and the son was 2. The answer is 6 years.

F = 5 x

so - let's see what 5x is - needs to be more than 7
since the father is 34 now and 5 x 7 is 35

next to try is 8 x 5 = 40

hmmmmm son 2 + 6 = 8
dad 34 + 6 = 40

solved - next!

6 years ago.
today father is 5x, son is x.
y years ago, father is 34, son is 2 so
5x=34+y and x=2+y
so: 5 (2+y) = 34+y
10+5y = 34+y
4y=24
y=6

8 years

F=5S
F-X=34
S-X=2

5S-x=34 (Substituting F=5S)
5S=34+X
S=(34+X)/5

[(34+X)/5] - X=2
32=4X
8=X
