I am male so my answers my be slightly biased.
My girlfriend has it fitted. There is no cost to have it fitted by your healthcare provider as it will be on the NHS.
The coil is placed in the uterus and this may cause some discomfort. Mirena is most appropriate for women who have had at least 1 child.
My girlfriend can not feel it at all. I can just manage to touch the strings that are used to remove it.
I can't comment on side effects but my girlfriend says that once your body is used to the small amount of a hormone each day then it is not noticable at all.
Finally mirena has just been approved for heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) in the UK by NICE.
I hope that this helps.

My experience of Mirena was entirely unhappy. There is no cost. Having it inserted was excruciating - I drove to the clinic and really felt I should have had someone with me to take me home. The pain lasted for weeks constantly and then intermittently for months. The doctor kept saying Just Persevere. I went to the clinic loads of times to get it taken out and each time ended up back outside with it stillin wonering how that happened. My partner constanty complained that something was pricking him and on several occasions he got a sore as a result. The doctor said it was impossible but when I finally had the thing removed it was like thick fishing wire cut at an angle and it was very sharp. The reason I had it removed in the end was that I developed a strange odour. Three days after the coil was removed there was no trace at all. It may not be the same for you but this is my experience.

Sorry I'm not in the UK, but had to comment. I'm in the US and I have the Mirena.........I love it. I haven't had any side effects. I did have a lot of spotting for the first few months after getting it. I haven't had a real period since having it put in place over 7 months ago. I have 5 kids and didn't have any pain having it placed.
Good luck with your decision!!

i might use the Mini tablet , while i became 19 i went on a reg. BC tablet and that i gained 40lbs in 7 months, so i ended it. I have been given married in the time of that element too, and my hubby and that i went to utilising condoms, ha, i finished up preggo 2 months in the previous our first aniversary. yet as quickly as my daughter became born, i went on the Mirena IUD, and its been a twelve months so far. and that i like it, my classes are lighter, basically heavy recognizing, I even have not gained weight, or something. yet maximum medical doctors wont provide it to you until eventually you're in a sturdy relationship and have had atleast one youngster. yet my different selection became going to be the mini tablet because it doesnt have estrogen in it, so which you shouldnt earnings weight and stuff like all different pills.

I had it and it wasnt too bad getting it inserted and no pain afterwards. I tried it for about a year and although I had no pain I did get occasional light bleeding between periods. I had it removed and again it was painless. Its worth trying as it really suits some people and if it doesnt suit you it is easily removed. It is free, just see your gp.

my experience of this device was bad, having it fitted is really horrible, i nearly fainted, then i felt very achy for a week or so .
then ifelt really very disconnected, spacy and i had no desire at all, i was not interested in being physical with my partner.
when i asked to have it removed the doctors were very patronising and disbeleiving , it was a releif to have it removed, i felt nomal again,
