Darn, I was going to tell you 'backyard', oh well I guess I'll answer seriously. Most 'Backyard' mechanics rely on word-of-mouth. Ask people you know if they know any. If you hear bad stuff about their work from people who have used them, then you shouldn't use them. Of course with today's complex cars it is probably best to find a certified mechanic.

most backyard mechanics are either out in the country, or in the poor part of town. Most are backyard mechanics because they can't afford to pay a shop to do the work. Most of the genuine motorheads end up working at a shop.
In the country they are called "Shade-tree" mechanics because they will use a stout limb on a shade tree as a place to attach a block and tackle for pulling the engine.
If one is really good, he will have a lot of business.

they are all RIGHT HERE in yahoo answers. unfortunately, most of the answers are very far off the mark. here, ill just take care of all of your future questions with backyard answers:
- sounds like your fuel filter is clogged.
- take it to autozone, theyll test it for free
- your mechanic screwed you, i did it on my 88 cavalier in 5 minutes
- it just needs a tune up
- if the headlights are on, the battery is ok. replace your alternator.
- the starter is good if it goes "click"
backyard mechanics are good for some easy things, like brake pads and such, but if your car is newer, and needs diagnosed, you really should see a proffessional. things have changed alot!!

if you want a good local home mechanic go ask at the parts houses. those guys are in the business to know who is good and who isn't. believe me......the other customers talk when they are in there and the guys behind the counter won't steer you wrong. It's thier reputation on the line too.
