Many people have tried to argue - some probably best buy employees - that stores have a right to go through your bags as you exit.
They cannot. Verify with your local police department and ask them.
If police need proper cause to search your belongings, then what makes anyone think a store clerk can violate your right.
Its a deterent, they do it because people allow them to. Its completely volunterily on your part.
But no store, no employee for any storecan attempt to detain you -- without making themself liable against lawsuit for illegal search, and illegal detaining you should you walk out and they try to prevent you from leaving.
Anyone tries to argue that, tell me what police department you called and what officer, so I can prove you wrong.
Just wanted to know if anyone knew their rights?

LANTERN -- they can only detain you IF they Witness you hiding merchandise.
They can threaten to clal the police .. and they can hold you -- only if you have taken something and they witnessed it -- otherwise, if they hold you -- that is illegally detaining you -- thats a lawsuit right there that you will win.
Its funny how so many people assume this to be true, and do it. I dont have a problem with it so long as theres no long line to wait. But sometimes around the holidays they want you to wait in a line to EXIT the store. thats a no no for me

Mixed -- you dont actually have to say anything at all, actually. You just keep walking. They can try calling you back, but you can leave. UNLESS THEY SEE YOU LEAVE WITH UNPAID MERCHANDISE CAN THEY STOP TO SEARCH YOU -- and they can ask for your permission. you can deny.
Or you can just say "thank you Im fine" that works for me when Im in a hurry
